Polkadot represents the forefront of decentralized network technology, shaping the construction and collaboration of blockchains. Initiated by Gavin Wood, a co-founder of Ethereum, its creation addresses the hurdles anticipated in a Web3 era.

In collaboration with the Polkadot community, our goal was to reinvent the brand in a way that empowers the community to embody and promote Web3’s vision through Polkadot. This approach led us to develop versatile branding tools instead of rigid guidelines, fostering unity yet embracing diversity. To embody this decentralized ethos in a tangible brand identity, we ensured it resonates with the core values of flexibility, interoperability, and evolution that Polkadot champions.

The Philharmonie Luxembourg is an esteemed music venue and acclaimed worldwide. In order to bond with a new generation of music-lovers, its emphasis and core values have been re-shifted to focus on emotion, live experiences, and the joy of music. To make this vision a reality, NB Studio and I collaborated on designing and realizing a new identity which puts music at the very heart of the brand. Designed as a 21st-century brand, the identity blends the sound of the music performed at the venue with its building’s signature vertical columns. As different genres of music are played, the design of the logo is altered, reflecting the genre in real-time and breathing life into the brand. In this way, the visual representation of the Philharmonie is constantly being refreshed and given an energy that appeals to music-lovers of all ages.

To celebrate Lexus’ partnership with eSports team 100 Thieves and their League of Legends world championship title, we created the Lexus Thieves NX: An art car whose design recreates every move and action of the decisive events that led to the team’s world championship title.

The car print design is based on generative design technology made specifically for the Lexus NX 100 T to produce a graphic representation of 100 Thieves’ championship win. Lines, nodes, and curves reflect player actions and movements from the team’s 11 victorious playoff matches. Each win is marked in reflective red ink and inscribed with the name of the top player.

Two years ago famed Swedish paper brand Munken developed a new font which they subsequently made available for everyone to use: Munken Sans – a timeless font, inspired by 1960’s Swedish typeface Tratex.

After the release, I was approached by agency JUNO to ideate and develop a novel playground for this font which would allow creatives to explore its application in surprising new ways. They specifically asked for a solution that would fuse the unexpectedness of Creative Coding- and Generative Design-based visual exploration with precise control over the font’s properties. The result of our dialogue is The Munken Creator: A playground of unimagined possibilities, enabling designers to create visually animated and unique messages. It is an invitation to inspire cooperation among creatives. And a challenge of how we preserve the heritage of design while simultaneously reinventing its tools for a hybrid future.

Agency Dragon Rouge Singapore invited me to bring to life their idea of a flexible visual design system which recognizes the multiple forms in which energy exists. An idea that reflects the various facets and states in which energy can exist – from the electrons of the sun, to the carbon molecules of our earth, to the latent potential that lies in every individual. This is exactly what each “PETRONAS dot” represents. The identity pays homage to Petrona’s core identity and emphasizes the brand’s expertise and technological capabilities.

To launch evian’s latest product innovation, I collaborated with Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam to create a lighthearted and compelling story which would get consumers to try the new evian+ line of products. The playful rhymes and metaphors, such as ‘Feeling Foggy? Get Fizzy.” were staged by a dynamic, animated typeface. To enable a simultaneous global rollout across multiple markets and languages, the typeface was created using Generative Design – effectively automating the design process and allowing for a quick and cost-effective translation and application of the complex visual style by multiple contractors and partners.

In the anniversary year 2020, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien is exhibiting artists who do more than quote, interpret or contrast Beethoven’s work: The exhibition shows how Beethoven’s expressivity and cultural power permeate artistic practice from Romanticism to the present day. Across eras and disciplines, the exhibits demonstrate Beethoven’s inspirational impact and cultural power: The Beethoven Phenomenon.

This project references the curatorial leitmotif of the exhibition: The aim of the communicative approach is to make The Beethoven Phenomenon linguistically and visually palpable and to anchor the relevance of the exhibition associatively.

Picture a stone hitting calm waters, creating a cascade of ripples – a sort of kinetic energy that brings to life ever-evolving forms of expressions to tell a story about breaking up the static and embracing the unexpected.

Distinctive patterns, born from a blend of disruption and artistry, capturing the essence of the brand by focussing on movement and the potent force of a rebellious spirit in motion.

When tasked with the brief of designing a flexible visual identity and design system for Creative Coding Utrecht’s “Art Machines” series of events I took inspiration from the event’s title and developed a quite literal art machine that can transform the portraits of participating artists and their machinery into infinite key visuals for the event’s communication collateral while showing that the web can touch both the digital and physical world.

Together with agency Edenspiekerman Amsterdam I developed an expressive visual system for the medical information company Elsevier using Generative Design approaches, Creative Coding, big data and an interactive, web-based GUI to control it all. The system is capable of outputting infinite on-brand marketing collateral while being adaptive of the product and use-case. The branding toolkit is capable of both autonomously creating visual expressions of data and can also react to a user’s personals input.

This revolutionary tool uses real-time Twitter-data and sentiment-artificial intelligence to translate social conversations around women in leadership into a living brand asset. Introducing: The Pulse. Developed for Women Political Leaders (WPL), a premier political women’s network with influential members from around the world. The Pulse is a dynamic, data-responsive graphic that reacts to six key topics: Power, Success, Community, Diversity, Change and Leadership – all representing WPL’s key values.

Unashamedly inspired by the great wines of Europe, the singular focus of YarraLoch is to create world class wines from the Yarra Valley which are distinguished by their unique elegance, balance and complexity. To round off this story, I was invited to work with the Australian agency Future Days to develop a living design system that emphasizes the uniqueness of each bottle. A story that revolves around the clouds and Australian climate in which the different characteristics of the Yarraloch wines mature.

BRUTE is a data-driven wine brand that distills the core weather elements of wind, rain & sun into a holistic visual and sensual experience. It uses historic and real-time weather data to shape its identity. So, as each vintage evolves with the climate, so does the brand.

A visual identity, crafted by the elements. The brand’s visual system and subsequent packaging is based on a real-time particle simulation with tens of thousands of individual elements. It can generate infinite interpretations of the core weather elements using Generative Design and Creative Coding approaches. These elements are set into motion by the defining weather factors and can be explored in 3D and even “frozen” in time.

In early 2018 I had the chance to collaborate with agencies onformative and Wolff Olins on the rebranding for the global management consultants McKinsey & company. One of the directions of the global pitch aimed at making the new McKinsey „smart M“ logo dynamic, bespoke and highly reactive. I was tasked with exploring non-traditional approaches, which made me come up with ideas ranging from using facial markers and employee’s names as data points for unique and tailor-made logo variations up to creating unique synthesized soundscapes based on people’s interaction with logo.

A significant part of my job often involves brainstorming and shaping new concepts that redefine what dynamic brands can be, making them more accessible, responsive, and expressive. This work, now almost six years old, represents an early stage in my journey. Looking back, it’s fascinating to see how my pursuit of impactful, data-driven branding has been a consistent theme in my career, even before I fully mastered the techniques of generative design.

This dynamic visual identity-system uses motion-capture data to combine visual algorithms with the personal expression of human dancers, creating intricate forms and mesmerizing snapshots of motion in the process.

It distills the very essence of its subject to create individual and uniquely branded design-variations for the famous ballet composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. It is a comment on and exploration of how modern design-systems can express their subjects in a way that detaches the designer from the actual process by using generative design-approaches, allowing for unforeseen and autonomous design-decisions.

Creating a visual identity is one of the most intricate and challenging tasks a designer can face and it is one of those very special realms that uniquely blur the lines between art and design. Aiding and promoting instant public recognition of a brand is a both timeless and singularly contemporary task that has a long-standing history of innovation and disruption.

To create the largest amount of possible logo-variations this specific algorithm uses randomness and chance as its main source of input. Future variations of this algorithm can however easily be modified to use different types of data as input – ranging from text-analysis over corporate data to even music to create more specific and (if desired) repeatable results.
